Just wondering what ULF formats folks are using. Do you use just one or multiple formats?
Maybe this will start a conversation.

Just wondering what ULF formats folks are using. Do you use just one or multiple formats? Maybe this will start a conversation. I am actively using my new 16x20 and 8x20 by design. I previously shot 20x24, 14x17, and 11x14, and I found that 16x20 in the sweet spot for my style and workflows. I mount my 16x20 contact prints with a four-inch border, making them 20x24 for the finished artwork. This is a really nice size for my taste. The 8x20 made perfect sense for my panos because of the 16x20. I just cut my negatives and papers in half that I am already using for the 16x20 and everything is good. Thanks -Tim

I started with a 8x20 and now have a 14x17 which out of all of my camera's (35mm, 4x5, 8x10, 8x20) is my favorite. 11x14 is a format that has always piqued my interest but right now I don't think I need another format, well at least that's what the practical part of my mind is saying right now. I'm not ruling out anything bigger than 14x17 in the future, but for now that is where I am.

This will be a new path for me to explore and I am dreaming of opportunities...

For me, and others I’m sure, it’s the practical limitations set out when working in the field. As much as I’d love to employ the 16x20 in all situations, this just isn’t possible nor arguably reasonable. The 11x14 is a practical ‘sweet spot’ that offers reasonable sized contacts, the ability to enlarge and also format swap some system lenses between 8x10 and up to 12x20.

Hi Phil, all good points for sure. In my case, my new 16x20 is actually lighter than my 11x14! I am getting ready to do a video on my ULF lenses and you will see in the video that I use the same lenses across all my ULF cameras and leverage them appropriately for each format. I have an 8x10 enlarger with the Heiland system when I want to make big silver prints, but I find myself doing that less and less over time because I love the ULF contact prints so much. I concur with all that Tim, having the ability hot swap lenses we know and trust to engage cross-format was a consideration that was particularly important to me being a regular overseas traveller with gear. The Chamonix 16x20 is a remarkable camera and incredibly sturdy for its size. Personally, and for my work I need to enlarge and make oversize prints using 8x10 and 11x14, using the larger ULF’s for contacts. I intend to be able enlarge beyond 11x14 and up to 16x20 early next year. I too employ the Heiland LED system, we have that in common also.
As a side, bravo for getting the ULF forum going, no small task I’m sure.
Phil

Thanks Phil, I appreciate your support. It takes a lot of time and expense to host this, so hopefully, we will get more supporters and be able to keep this site alive and going strong for our small and niche community. I am in it for the long haul for sure.
